Summer in Lakeland gives families a chance to slow down, spend time together, and create meaningful memories. Between busy schedules, school stress, work demands, and technology distractions, many parents are looking for simple ways to reconnect with their children.
At Atala Counseling, we believe that emotional attunement is one of the strongest foundations for healthy relationships and emotional wellness. Emotional attunement is the ability to notice, understand, and respond to your child’s emotions. The good news is that building emotional connection does not have to be expensive or complicated.
Lakeland is full of free, low-cost, and reduced-fee activities that encourage quality time, communication, laughter, and emotional bonding between parents and children.
Whether you have toddlers, school-age children, or teens, these family-friendly summer activities can help strengthen your relationship while supporting your child’s emotional development.
Why Parent-Child Bonding Matters
Spending intentional time together helps children feel emotionally safe, supported, and valued. Research consistently shows that strong parent-child relationships improve emotional resilience and mental health.
Benefits of Engaging in Activities With Your Kids
1. Builds Emotional Security
When children feel seen and connected to their parents, they are more likely to feel safe expressing emotions and asking for help when needed.
2. Improves Communication
Shared experiences naturally create opportunities for conversation. Kids are often more open during walks, play, art activities, or car rides than during formal conversations.
3. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Positive family interactions help regulate stress for both children and parents. Outdoor play, laughter, and movement can support emotional regulation and reduce tension.
4. Strengthens Trust and Attachment
Consistent quality time helps children develop trust in their caregivers, which supports confidence, resilience, and healthy relationships later in life.
5. Creates Positive Childhood Memories
Children may not remember every toy or purchase, but they often remember how they felt during shared family experiences.
Free and Affordable Summer Activities for Families in Lakeland
Explore Bonnet Springs Park Together
One of Lakeland’s most popular family destinations, Bonnet Springs Park offers endless opportunities for connection and play. Families can walk the canopy trail, visit the playgrounds, explore the gardens, enjoy splash areas, or attend free community events.
Parents can use this time to practice emotional attunement by slowing down and following their child’s lead. Ask open-ended questions like:
- “What has been your favorite part so far?”
- “What do you notice around you?”
- “How are you feeling today?”
Many of the park’s summer programs and family events are free. To learn more about Bonnet Springs Park, visit their website: https://bonnetspringspark.com/
Visit Circle B Bar Reserve
Circle B Bar Reserve gives families a chance to unplug and enjoy nature together. Walking the trails, spotting wildlife, and exploring the outdoors can encourage mindfulness and calm.
Nature-based activities also help children regulate emotions and reduce overstimulation from screens and busy schedules.
Bring:
- Water bottles
- A simple snack or picnic
- A scavenger hunt list
- Binoculars for bird watching
Parents can encourage emotional awareness by asking children what they notice, enjoy, or feel during the walk. To learn more about Circle B Reserve, visit their website: https://www.polkfl.gov/park/circle-b-bar-reserve-nature-center/
Attend Free Library Programs
The Lakeland Public Library system offers free summer reading programs, story times, craft activities, and educational events for children and teens.
Libraries are excellent spaces for bonding because they encourage curiosity, creativity, and learning without financial pressure.
Try:
- Reading together after story time
- Letting your child choose books independently
- Creating a family reading challenge
- Discussing characters’ emotions and choices
These conversations can help children strengthen emotional vocabulary and empathy. To learn more about events at Lakeland Public Library, visit their website: https://www.lakelandgov.net/departments/library/
Explore the Downtown Lakeland Farmers Market
The Downtown Lakeland Farmers Market is a simple way to spend intentional time together while supporting local businesses.
Parents can involve children in:
- Choosing fruits or snacks
- Listening to live music

Create a DIY Family Picnic at Lake Hollingsworth
A family picnic does not have to be elaborate. Pack sandwiches, fruit, or simple snacks and spend time walking around Lake Hollingsworth.
You can also bring:
- Sidewalk chalk
- A soccer ball or frisbee
- Card games
- A journal for drawing or gratitude lists
Moments of calm connection often help children open up emotionally.
Visit the Florida Children’s Museum During Reduced-Fee Events
The Florida Children’s Museum at Bonnet Springs Park occasionally offers community events, reduced-fee programming, and family-focused activities.
Interactive play helps children build confidence, creativity, and social-emotional skills while giving parents opportunities to engage in child-led play. During the design and construction phases of the Florida’s Children Museum, the integration of sensory exploration and imaginative play were the focal point. The staff of the museum wanted to create a space where children would play to learn about the world, and parents would learn to play again. This simple idea supports the strengthening of bonding and communication between children and their caregivers.
The Florida Children’s Museum collaborates with local libraries to distribute passes so children can attend for FREE. To learn more about the Florida Children’s Museum, visit their website: https://explorefcm.org/

Simple Ways to Build Emotional Attunement During Activities
The activity itself matters less than the emotional connection created during the experience.
Amanda Frye, LCSW is a child and family therapist at Atala Counseling. Amanda educates the parents she works with that:
“Summer can feel overwhelming for parents as their children look to them for ways to keep them entertained or occupied. When considering activities that build connection, focus on quality versus quantity.
For children ages 5 and under, 15–20-minute increments of your undivided attention spread throughout the day tells them ‘I am seen, I am important.’ For children ages 6 and older, 20–30-minute increments spread throughout the day tell them, ‘You hear me and my needs matter to you.’”
Here are a few ways parents can intentionally strengthen emotional attunement while spending time together:
Practice Active Listening
Put away phones when possible and focus on listening without immediately correcting, teaching, or solving.
Follow Your Child’s Interests
Children often feel most connected when parents show genuine curiosity about what excites them.
Validate Emotions
If your child becomes frustrated, overwhelmed, excited, or disappointed during an activity, acknowledge the feeling instead of dismissing it.
Examples:
- “I can see that was disappointing.”
- “You seem really excited about this.”
- “That looked frustrating.”
When Katherine Pilarte Emerick, LMFT is supporting her families and couples, she shares that:
“Children whose emotions are not validated may struggle with self-esteem because they may learn to doubt their internal experience, question their worth, and tend to disconnect from their own emotional needs.”
Focus on Presence Over Perfection
Children do not need perfect parents. They benefit most from emotionally available parents who are willing to engage consistently.
Katherine Pilarte Emerick, LMFT guides her couples and families by teaching them to:
“Apologize when needed and model how to repair, reconnect, and try again. This helps children learn accountability and emotional safety.”
